IBVM (Loreto) Institute & Irish Province Archives identifies, collects, protects, preserves and makes available those records of enduring value created by, or otherwise relating to, the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Loreto) Institute Council and Irish Province.



The Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary was established by Frances Teresa Ball, in Dublin in 1821. The IBVM (Loreto) Institute and Irish Province Archives document the foundation, development and worldwide expansion of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary from its foundation to the present day.

Constitutions, handwritten by M. Teresa Ball during her time in York,
and brought to Dublin in 1821.



The IBVM (Loreto) Institute & Irish Province Archives contains records of the administration of the worldwide Institute from 1821. This collection includes, but is not limited to the minutes of the Institute Council, minutes of General Congregations and General Chapters, Constitutions, Rescripts and Decrees, and correspondence of the General Superiors.

The Irish Province Archives holds the records of the administration of the Irish Province, records from individual Irish houses and communities, novitiate records, minutes of the Irish Provincial Council, and correspondence of the Irish Provincial.

There is an extensive photographic collection, created from the early 20th century onwards.

In addition there are records from each of the provinces; Australia & South East Asia, Canada, Eastern Africa, England, India, Mauritius, Peru, South Africa, Spain and USA.

The Irish Province Archives do not as a rule hold the records from Loreto Schools.
